In black metal worden termen als “void” en “abyss” vaak te pas en te onpas gebruikt, maar zelden voelen ze zo oprecht, zo tastbaar aan als bij Abyssal Vacuum. Vanuit een duisternis die geen afwezigheid is maar een entiteit op zich, ontvouwt zich op dit zelfgetitelde debuut een auditieve tocht door spirituele leegte, extase en onderdrukte kosmische energie.
Oorspronkelijk begonnen als het soloproject van Sebastien B. (Dysylumn, Ominous Shrine), groeide de band de voorbije jaren uit tot een hecht Frans viertal. De meest recente toevoeging is leadgitarist Onbra, gekend van onder andere Serpens Luminis en Viande, en dat is hoorbaar: dit is black metal die bij momenten lijkt op te stijgen boven zijn genregrenzen, zwevend tussen trance, miserie en visioen.
De tracks dragen geen namen, maar coördinaten: geografische codes die wijzen op fysiek bestaande, occulte plekken zoals de Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, of diepe, ongerepte natuurgebieden in Georgië, Belize en Zuid-Frankrijk. Elke locatie wordt bezield met muzikale krachten die reiken van ritualistische gezangen tot post-rockachtige leadlijnen die niet alleen ontroeren, maar ook betoveren. Wie enkel leeft van atonale herrie zal hier weinig mee kunnen, maar voor wie de leegte wil voelen als bron in plaats van dreiging, is dit een zeldzame ervaring.
Abyssal Vacuum klinkt tegelijk meeslepend en afstandelijk, alsof je als luisteraar via een ondergrondse stroom wordt voortgetrokken – niet tegen je wil, maar evenmin met volledige overgave. Ritmisch en compositorisch is het geheel doordacht opgebouwd: de dreiging zit in de details, de extase in de climaxen. Koorzangen, keelklanken, samples en screams wisselen elkaar af met een vanzelfsprekendheid die enkel mogelijk is bij bands die volledig op elkaar afgestemd zijn.
Dit is geen plaat om even snel door te jagen. Abyssal Vacuum is een rite die veertig minuten lang je bewustzijn buigt, vervormt en uiteindelijk hervormt.

Emerging from a darkness that isn’t absence but a presence of its own, this French quartet drags the listener into a hallucinatory descent through spiritual emptiness and cosmic tension.
What began as a solo project of Sebastien B. (Dysylumn, Ominous Shrine) has now evolved into a full ensemble, with the addition of Onbra (Serpens Luminis, Viande) on lead guitar. His presence is felt in the rich melodic leads that carry this record beyond genre conventions — into realms of trance, grief, and revelation.
Rather than conventional song titles, each track is named after geographic coordinates. These point to places like Mammoth Cave in Kentucky or obscure wilderness zones in Georgia and Belize — sites of natural power and perhaps ancient resonance. Each location is rendered in sound through soaring, emotional melodies, layered choral passages, guttural chants, and blast-ridden fury.
This isn’t chaos — it’s control through invocation. Abyssal Vacuum isn’t content with noise. It seeks transformation.
The music breathes and contracts, guiding the listener like an underground current — compelling but never coercive. There’s ritualistic intent behind every detail, with vocals shifting seamlessly between whispered hymns and fervent screams, samples bending reality, and guitars that light up the darkness like burning sigils.This is not a record to casually consume.Abyssal Vacuum is a 40-minute rite of passage that dissolves perception and rebuilds it in the shape of the abyss.
