De schaduwen boven de Belgische ondergrond zijn dieper geworden nu Archaic Oath hun verbond eindelijk in bloed heeft bezegeld met Determined to Death and Beyond. Arne Vandehoeck (Arneriach), de getergde stem achter Marche Funèbre, en Filip Dupont (Lykormas), de architect van duisternis in onder andere Hemelbestormer, Gorath, Rituals of the Dead Hand, wekken een visie tot leven die sinds 2005 in de krochten van hun geest suddert. AOP Records biedt deze ceremonie een passend altaar. Dit is een rite van koude verering voor de Zweedse traditie waarbij de geest van Dissection en Naglfar herrijst uit een bevroren graf.
Het album ontwaakt met de ijzige adem van “Above the Ice”. Filip Dupont ontketent een muur van tremolo-gedreven gitaarlijnen die de luisteraar onverbiddelijk de leegte in sleuren. De bezeten vocalen van Arne Vandehoeck fungeren als een baken van wanhoop in deze storm van zwartmetaal. In “Wrath of the Witches” bereikt de waanzin een hoogtepunt wanneer de rituele stemmen van Cin Monrose en de jonge Jitte Boon zich mengen met de ijzige screams. Dupont weeft zijn eerste melodieuze solo’s door het weefsel van de composities als een giftig eerbetoon aan de meesters van de jaren negentig.
De verwoesting raast voort in “Forest of Horrors” en het meedogenloze “Path of Penitence”. Furieuze blastbeats versmelten met een atmosfeer die naar rot en oude rituelen ruikt. De productie van Dupont bij Crestfallen Audio is bewust rauw en scherp gehouden zodat de instrumenten als bevroren staal tegen de trommelvliezen schuren. Een duistere diepgang wordt bereikt in “Abysmal Ascent” waar mystieke cleane koorzangen zich als schimmen boven de agressieve fundamenten verheffen.
Het absolute brandpunt van deze plaat is “Into the Temple of Light”. Deze zeven minuten durende afdaling in een melancholische afgrond gebruikt de gitaarbijdragen van Kristof Vandebeek (Mahlstrøm, The Quiescent) om de duisternis tastbaarder te maken. Tremolo picking en verstikkende atmosferen bouwen hier een massieve schaduwmuur op die blijft nazinderen lang nadat de laatste noot gestorven is.
Archaic Oath sluit de ceremonie af met een interpretatie van “Ye Entrancemperium” van Emperor. Deze bezwering laat bij mij echter een minder diepe wonde achter. Dat heeft weinig met de uitvoering zelf te maken en alles met de schaduw waarin mijn eigen geest nog steeds ronddwaalt. Het zijn de vroegste openbaringen van Emperor die blijven branden als grafvuur in de nacht, terwijl de latere gedaanten mij nooit volledig hebben opgeslokt. Toch blijft Determined to Death and Beyond een traditioneel zwartmetalen werkstuk dat met overtuiging en kennis van het oude vuur werd gesmeed.

The shadows above the Belgian underground have deepened now that Archaic Oath have finally sealed their pact in blood with Determined to Death and Beyond. Arne Vandehoeck (Arneriach), the tormented voice behind Marche Funèbre, and Filip Dupont (Lykormas), architect of darkness within among others Hemelbestormer, Gorath and Rituals of the Dead Hand, awaken a vision that has been smouldering in the crypts of their minds since 2005. AOP Records offers a fitting altar to this ceremony. This is a rite of cold devotion to the Swedish tradition where the spirit of Dissection and Naglfar rises once more from a frozen grave.
The album awakens with the icy breath of “Above the Ice”. Filip Dupont unleashes a wall of tremolo-driven guitar lines dragging the listener mercilessly into the void. The possessed vocals of Arne Vandehoeck function as a beacon of despair within this storm of black metal. On “Wrath of the Witches”, the madness reaches its peak as the ritual voices of Cin Monrose and the young Jitte Boon merge with the freezing screams. Dupont threads his first melodic solos through the fabric of the compositions like a poisonous tribute to the masters of the nineties.
The devastation continues through “Forest of Horrors” and the relentless “Path of Penitence”. Furious blast beats merge with an atmosphere reeking of decay and ancient rites. Dupont’s production at Crestfallen Audio remains deliberately raw and sharp, allowing the instruments to scrape against the listener like frozen steel. A deeper darkness emerges in “Abysmal Ascent”, where mystical clean choirs rise like spectres above the aggressive foundations of the track.
The absolute focal point of this album is “Into the Temple of Light”. This seven-minute descent into a melancholic abyss uses the guitar contributions of Kristof Vandebeek (Mahlstrøm, The Quiescent) to make the darkness even more tangible. Tremolo picking and suffocating atmospheres build a massive wall of shadows that continues to echo long after the final note has died.
Archaic Oath close the ceremony with an interpretation of “Ye Entrancemperium” by Emperor. This invocation leaves a less profound wound upon me. That has little to do with the performance itself and everything to do with the shadows in which my own spirit still wanders. It is the earliest revelations of Emperor that continue to burn like gravefire in the night, while the later incarnations never fully consumed me. Still, Determined to Death and Beyond remains a traditional black metal work forged with conviction and knowledge of the ancient flame.
