English version
.Johan “Shamaatae” Lahger first sat behind a drum kit in 1988, in a band formed with three childhood friends and named Grotesque. Short-lived, but deeply etched into the memory of the Swedish underground through the cult demo Ripped From The Cross. Five years later he joined Sorhin, a band already slightly older, which left its own scar on that same scene with I Fullmånens Dystra Sken, a band still carried with reverence by those who cherish the early Swedish extreme metal underground. Between those two episodes, in 1992, Lahger planted the seed of what would become Arckanum: initially a trio, featuring among others his brother Sataros, who also played in Absorption and later in Sorhin himself. Soon only Shamaatae remained, and Arckanum grew into one of the most respected one-man projects the Swedish black metal scene has produced.
That lineage matters when listening to Motestandarin. This troll carries thirty years of underground roots, far beyond the stage of a newcomer testing the throne, returned from a dormancy that began when Arckanum abruptly closed its doors in 2018 following Den förstfödde. Blood proved thicker than water. What followed proved to be a winter sleep, and with this EP Shamaatae proves he never truly left.
The two songs form a venomous preview of Beswærilsin, the tenth studio album due in October 2026, with two further full-lengths already waiting at the label. “Skaepna aer krigh” pulls tight through hypnotic repetition: icy melodic lines circle around Shamaatae’s bone-dry rasp, carried by a production that reads unusually clear without shedding its bleak atmosphere. The composition leans on a mid-tempo directness reminiscent of Norway’s Khold, while its filthy, traditional riffing keeps its Swedish folklore-mysticism firmly intact. “Anskoti” takes the opposite path, launching with real momentum as a prominent, varied pumping bassline drives the track. Midway through it breaks open into a dark, atmospheric mid-section, before the drums fall back in and carry the song toward a melodic climax.
The cover drives that darkness home visually: a black, white and red woodcut depicts a snarling wolf-troll, its paws and jaws soaked in blood, framed by a runic border that closes around the beast like an incantation.
Those hoping for a return to the raw nineties may walk away wanting. Motestandarin picks up the thread where Arckanum left it in 2018, carrying a more organic, more atmospheric sound faithful to the project’s later chapter. For those who evolved alongside that shift, this is exactly the venomous, well-forged continuity it promised: a troll who never lost its teeth, only sharpened them a while longer in the dark.
The EP is available digitally and as a strictly limited 7″ vinyl, restricted to 218 hand-numbered copies, exclusive to the Darkness Shall Rise Productions webshop.
