Asgrauw – Solips (2026) Review

(English version below)

Confabulatie valt zonder omweg binnen.

English version

From Groesbeek in the Dutch province of Gelderland, Asgrauw have been forging their own sound within the Dutch black metal underground since 2010. Solips marks the trio’s seventh album. While Oorsprong (2024) explored mythology and the origins of mankind, the gaze now turns inward. Perception, memory, time and consciousness lie at the heart of a record that calls reality itself into question. Solips will be released in November on tape and vinyl through Zwaertgevegt, while Hidden Marly Productions handles the CD edition. The accompanying shirt will be available through Void Wanderer Productions, the label run by bassist Kaos.

Confabulatie wastes no time. Cutting tremolo riffs tear through the silence, the drums rage relentlessly and the alternating voices of Vaal and Kaos set the tone. The Scandinavian second wave of the nineties provides the foundation, with traces of the Finnish school surrounding Horna and Sargeist. Keyboards cast a cold shadow behind the guitar assault, while a distinctive horn-like sound also emerges in Confabulatie. The production remains clear and dynamic, retaining enough rawness to preserve the icy atmosphere.

Verblind begins with a narrative voice and gradually builds tension before the tempo erupts once more. Chronisch gallops forward on Batr’s drumming, driven by strong melodies and occasional vocal interplay. Nachtstorm follows a more unpredictable course, with unexpected tempo changes and a remarkably prolonged scream. Its lyrics explore quantum immortality, the idea that consciousness continues to exist in another reality after death. Schaduwganger leans heavily towards the Finnish school, with venomous riffs and keyboards lending additional weight to the melodies. Manipulatie, dealing with time travel, takes a more angular approach, introducing dissonant passages and vocals carrying a punk-infused, almost black ’n’ roll aggression.

Nadirflux brings the album to an apocalyptic conclusion. A simulated reality begins to crumble as its invisible controllers withdraw. The vocals sound particularly extreme here, while the keyboards assume a more prominent role alongside the guitars. The resulting sense of impending collapse fits perfectly within the album’s underlying concept.

Solips can be demanding at times. Its more complex structures and less immediately apparent melodies only reveal themselves after repeated listens. Asgrauw remain faithful to the raw, melodic black metal with which they have carved out their place in the Dutch underground over the years, and with this album they stand at the forefront of Dutch-language black metal. What awakens in Confabulatie disintegrates in Nadirflux, leaving only cold ashes behind.
