Blood Countess – Imperatrix Sanguinis (2026) Review

(English version below)

The Cuntess is geen eendimensionale schreeuwmachine. Zij huilt. Zij kreunt. Zij beveelt.

Hier huilt The Cuntess opnieuw.

English version

Somewhere within the grey shroud of northern England, something ancient and venomous stirs. Blood Countess, led by the icy presence of frontwoman The Cuntess, returns with Imperatrix Sanguinis, Empress of Blood, a second album that brands the legacy of Elizabeth Báthory into flesh itself. Four years after Occulta Tenebris, the band sounds sharper, more focused and more merciless. The Hungarian countess lives on in every scream, every riff and every line of text that elevates obsession and madness into art.

The production breathes the raw, cold spirit of the second wave. Bone-dry and distant, as though recorded within a stone dungeon from which the sound struggles to escape. References to Enthroned, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult and Dissection are present, yet never descend into mere imitation. Blood Countess possesses a blood-soaked voice of its own. Then there are the vocals. The Cuntess is far more than a one-dimensional screamer. She weeps. She groans. She commands. At times a hysterical laugh rises from the darkness, elsewhere a chilling shriek tears through the air. Her voice moves through humiliation, desire, complete madness and cruelty as if all these manifestations belong to the same entity. The boundary between executioner and victim dissolves within her throat into something deeply unsettling, drenching Báthory’s universe of pain and dominion in a sense of psychological disintegration. Her presence hangs over the entire album like a shadow. Many of these incantations would lose part of their power without her voice serving as the guiding hand behind the torture chamber door.

Chains of Misdeed opens the album like a door creaking on rusted hinges: rattling chains, followed by a sob that transforms into a scream piercing through the fog. The lyrics plead and command simultaneously, submission becoming so complete that it turns perverse, the Countess invoked as a deity of pain. Sadistic Marchioness follows with riffs that linger in the mind, remarkably memorable for music this raw. The Countess reigns over corpses here, her voice cold and triumphant above the devastation. A Humiliating Plea for the Glorification of Erotic Suffering dances dangerously between frantic speed and dragging mid-tempo passages, with lead guitar flaring up like a torch in a dark corridor. The victim returns again and again, almost pleading. The Scavenger’s Daughter tortures relentlessly for nearly four minutes, blast beats landing like blows, a confession extracted through violence.

Shackles of Sin is not a song; it is a ritual. The moans of a tortured woman echo between chains and cold synths. Everything is slowly guided toward an icy death scream that tears open the silence and leaves a trail of unease behind. Purge of Trenčín erupts afterwards like a fortress collapsing: Báthory’s systematic predation upon the young women of the city is reborn through lyrics of promises and betrayal, bread withheld, blood demanded and bodies that never return home. Midway through, the pace sinks and the darkness expands. Schadenfreude captures the spirit of the nineties in a glass vessel before shattering it. Here The Cuntess groans between the blast beats, the madness of the devoted follower palpable in every syllable. Closing track Anna Nádasdy stands as the album’s coldest pinnacle: Dissection-inspired melodies intertwined with subtle synths, forming an icy accusation against a maternal figure portrayed as a source of lies, violence and death. The condemnation glows cold as moonlight upon frozen stone. Here The Cuntess weeps once more. Every outburst sounds like an accusation, every cry like an act of reckoning.

Eight incantations. Ice-cold. Venomous. Blood Countess continues to expand its blood-soaked universe with a conviction that remains tangible from the first minute to the last. Imperatrix Sanguinis is an offering for the devoted worshipper of uncompromising, perverse black metal.
