English version
A black mist rises from the damp, decaying catacombs of Poznań. Only five months after their first sacrificial offering, the young quartet of Characith returns to tear through the cosmos with their second demo, Curse of the Black Mist. A raw, occult ritual for the underground, dragging the listener mercilessly into the darkness.
From the moment the icy, solemn synths take possession of the space, it becomes clear that these young demons have forged a pact with the past. Their sound breathes the spirit of Dissection’s Storm of the Light’s Bane. Where Jon Nödtveidt once opted for a clear production, Characith pulls those same cold melodies deeper underground. The result is rawer, dirtier and more unpolished. The guitar riffs carve themselves into the memory through possessed tremolo picking and a strong melodic undercurrent. The production is dark and raw. The recording carries the scent of a damp rehearsal cellar. Moist walls and amplifiers glowing deep into the night seem to have become part of the sound itself.
The epic title track immediately sets the tone with an infernal storm rising from the east, driven by throat-ripping vocals and thunderous percussion balancing on the boundary between chaos and discipline. The melodies continue to unfold slowly while subtle tempo changes constantly sharpen the tension. The following Pearly Tears of Light opens another gate. An acoustic interlude breaks open the assault and forms the heart of a composition where melancholy, grandeur and blasphemy converge. The melodic guitar lines linger long after the final notes have faded and reveal a remarkable sense of songwriting.
The closing track Visions Clear stands as the pinnacle of this tape. During its opening minutes, the shadow of Dissection’s Night’s Blood looms heavily over the composition. The melodic build-up, the atmosphere of menace and the acoustic interlude evoke memories of the Swedish classic, while Characith retains enough fire of their own to avoid sounding like a mere imitation. The guitar lines intertwine into a compelling current of melody and aggression. Beneath it all, the bass rumbles with ominous force, adding further weight to the composition. The track grows into a fitting conclusion to a demo that never loses its grip.
Curse of the Black Mist is a uncompromising step forward on the path Characith began with their debut. The legacy of the nineties lives on here in a form that feels sincere, hungry and convincing. The Polish underground has gained a name worth watching closely.
