Twee Montréalse bezweringen op één mes. Conifère en Vespéral, bloedverwanten uit de vruchtbare Québécoise zwarte aarde, smeden op deze split-EP hun krachten samen. De verbinding is concreet: zanger Cauchemar en gitarist/toetsenist Nakkabre staan aan het roer bij Conifère, terwijl zij bij Vespéral respectievelijk bas en slagwerk bestieren. Dat gedeelde bloed hoor je.
Conifère opent met “Faits d’Armes en Chants”, een manifest van hun heidens, episch black metal universum. De riffs branden met de intensiteit die “L’impôt du sang” al zo onweerstaanbaar maakte, maar de band reikt hier verder. Melodieën die aan Dissection herinneren, rijker en weelderiger dan ooit, dragen een verhaal dat even narratief als verwoestend is. De heldere vocalen, voor Conifère ongewoon terrein, dienen zich aan als een nieuwe wapening in hun arsenaal. Akoestische passages openen en sluiten als poorten tussen wereld en woud.
Vespéral antwoordt met “Souvenirs Labyrinthiques”, een atmosferische afdaling in het labyrint van de eigen psyche. De klavieren zweven onophoudelijk, als koude adem boven bevroren water. Zwaarder dan Conifère, lineairder in beweging, maar de duisternis gloeit intenser. De DSBM-wortels van de band persen een pessimisme uit dat bezinkt als as na een brand. Ook hier klinken heldere stemmen, en ook hier voegen zij iets blootliggends en kwetsbaars toe aan het geheel.
Twee bands, één gedeeld hart, twee onderscheiden zielen. “À Double Tranchant” snijdt aan beide zijden, en laat een litteken achter dat niet snel vervaagt. De split verscheen op 13 maart 2026 digitaal via de bands zelf. GoatowaRex verzorgt binnenkort de fysieke uitgave.

Two Montréal incantations on a single blade. Conifère and Vespéral, kindred blood from the fertile Québécois black soil, join forces on this split EP. The connection is concrete: vocalist Cauchemar and guitarist/keyboardist Nakkabre lead Conifère, while in Vespéral they handle bass and drums respectively. That shared blood is audible.
Conifère opens with “Faits d’Armes en Chants”, a manifesto of their pagan, epic black metal universe. The riffs burn with the intensity that made L’impôt du sang so compelling, yet the band reaches further here. Melodies reminiscent of Dissection, richer and more expansive than before, carry a narrative that feels both unfolding and destructive. Clean vocals, uncommon territory for Conifère, emerge as a new weapon in their arsenal. Acoustic passages open and close like gates between world and woodland.
Vespéral responds with “Souvenirs Labyrinthiques”, an atmospheric descent into the labyrinth of the self. The keyboards hover continuously, like cold breath over frozen water. Heavier than Conifère, more linear in motion, yet the darkness burns more intensely. The band’s DSBM roots extract a pessimism that settles like ash after fire. Clean voices appear here as well, adding a sense of exposure and vulnerability to the whole.
Two bands, one shared heart, two distinct spirits. À Double Tranchant cuts on both sides, leaving a wound that does not fade quickly. The split was released digitally on March 13, 2026 by the bands themselves. GoatowaRex will handle the physical release in the near future.
