Twee continenten, één label, één verbond gesmeed in melancholie en roest. Signal Rex verenigt het Finse Dark Divination met het Ecuadoriaanse Wampyric Rites op deze split, en de geografische afstand tussen Espoo en Quito blijkt geen hindernis voor een gedeelde ziel.
Dark Divinator opent met “Tainted by Hatred” in smachtende toonzetting: trage, weemoedige gitaarlijnen verstrengeld met zwevende, kosmische toetsenklanken. De rauwheid zit zowel in de productie als in het stemgeluid, en juist in die eenvoud schuilt de zeggingskracht. Na enkele minuten breekt het nummer open in een fel, tremolo-gedreven geweld waarin de vocalen hartstochtelijk uithalen, het scherpere, onstuimigere gezicht van de band toont zich hier onverbloemd. Daarna keert de rust terug, en de melancholie wordt verdiept door schone achtergrondzang die de schorre schreeuwen tegenspreekt. De laatste minuut vervaagt in kosmische omfloersing, een sluitstuk dat de weemoed van het begin in stilte laat wegsterven.
Wampyric Strigoi draait het vinyl om met “Evil Spirit of Varcolaci”, ruw geproduceerd maar helder genoeg om elk onderdeel te ontwaren. De melancholische gitaarleads weven het nummer samen, terwijl de drums de eigenlijke aanjager vormen, vooral richting het einde nemen zij duidelijk de leiding. Halverwege verschijnt een gitaarsolo zonder overdadige vertoning, doordrenkt met de geest van de jaren negentig.
Een alliantie die haar naam waardig is: Finse ruwheid en Ecuadoriaanse woestheid, verenigd in eenzelfde donker verlangen.

Two continents, one label, one alliance forged in melancholy and rust. Signal Rex unites Finland’s Dark Divination with Ecuador’s Wampyric Rites on this split, and the geographic distance between Espoo and Quito proves no obstacle to a shared soul.
Dark Divinator opens with “Tainted by Hatred” in yearning tone: slow, melancholic guitar lines entwined with floating, cosmic keyboard accents. The rawness lies in both the production and the vocal delivery, and it is precisely in that simplicity that the power resides. After a few minutes the song breaks open into a fierce, tremolo-driven onslaught in which the vocals cry out with passion, the sharper, more turbulent face of the band revealing itself unguarded. Calm then returns, the melancholy deepened by clean backing vocals that answer the raw shrieks. The final minute fades into cosmic haze, a closing passage that lets the yearning of the opening die away in silence.
Wampyric Strigoi flips the vinyl with “Evil Spirit of Varcolaci,” raw in production yet clear enough to discern every part. The melancholic guitar leads weave the song together, while the drums serve as the true driving force, taking the lead especially toward the end. Midway through, a guitar solo appears without excessive display, steeped in the spirit of the nineties.
An alliance worthy of its name: Finnish rawness and Ecuadorian ferocity, united in one and the same dark longing.
