After a demo, two splits and fourteen years spent lurking in the shadows, De Vermis Mysteriis finally unveils its first full-length album. It is also its last. What remains is a testament left behind by a band that refused to disappear without a trace.
The roots of D.V.M. reach back to the Ordo Omegae Absolutae collective, where the band once stood alongside Necrosophia, Morkenatten and Sepulchrum. A circle united by a shared obsession with occultism and with knowledge better left undisturbed. That obsession crystallises here into a concept that reaches far beyond a superficial nod to Cthulhu or the Necronomicon. The Faceless Labyrinth of Interstellar Madness follows a conjurer who, driven by hubris, buries himself ever deeper in forbidden knowledge. Hubris crumbles into paranoia, identity dissolves into darkness until nothing remains but complete submission to forces that lie far beyond any human measure. Across ten compositions, the warning that one does not know what powers one toys with echoes relentlessly until the seals are broken and the death bell tolls for the end of humanity’s sovereignty.
Musically, D.V.M. breathes the frozen spirit of the early Scandinavian school. The guitar work forms the beating heart of this album. Harmonies emerge almost imperceptibly from a single melodic root, only to branch out into entirely new patterns moments later. Lead and rhythm guitars continuously dissolve into one another, as though both instruments were merely different faces of the same incantation. Hardly has one motif settled into memory before another harmonic turn presents itself like the next gallery within the same labyrinth. Soaring leads flare up like will-o’-the-wisps above a nocturnal landscape, pointing towards a passage that soon retreats into darkness once more. Whenever the distortion briefly withdraws, acoustic guitars open another chamber within the same ritual, where the tension is slowly sharpened before a new wave of riffs rises once again. Throughout it all, melody remains the invisible thread that holds the entire structure together, binding each incantation to the next.
Meanwhile, Θ demonstrates just how far he has evolved as a vocalist since the first Matavitatau demo. That progression was already evident on the recent EP, yet it reaches its full expression here. His voice is no longer confined to a single rasp. Solemn proclamations resound like liturgies from a forgotten crypt before suddenly giving way to piercing shrieks, cavernous growls or whispers barely distinguishable from the surrounding darkness. He does not merely perform these lyrics; he allows them to take possession of his voice, as though different entities successively claimed the same throat. Every vocal manifestation seems born directly from the breathing of the riffs, allowing voice and guitar work to merge into one continuous incantation.
With a running time approaching the one-hour mark, the album maintains its grip from beginning to end. No riff is stretched beyond its purpose, no incantation repeated without reason. D.V.M. chose to carve its final invocation into stone. The Faceless Labyrinth of Interstellar Madness feels like a grimoire whose final page is turned only when the last note has faded into silence. It is a great pity that the gates close forever at the very moment De Vermis Mysteriis reaches its highest form.
