Een crypte in Amerikaanse bodem opent zich opnieuw. Enthroning Nightfall, het duo achter deze infernale ceremonie, roept met The Infernal Masquerade een geest op die al decennia in de aarde had moeten liggen, maar weigert te rusten. Lord Nachzherer voert het ritueel aan met stem, snaren en spookachtige synthlagen, terwijl Lord Avgrunn von Ravenlock op de achtergrond de trommelvellen geselt als een bezeten doodgraver. Na de Shadowland Mysteries-demo uit 2024 wordt hier voor het eerst een volwaardige oproeping voltrokken, uitgegeven door Sonorous Night in samenwerking met New Era Productions.
Vier gezangen, goed voor zeventien minuten en negenenveertig seconden, vormen samen een seance waarin de tweede golf black metal uit haar graf wordt teruggeroepen. IJzige tremolo’s kronkelen als wortels door bevroren aarde, terwijl de vocalen van Nachzherer zich als een bezweringsformule over de luisteraar uitstorten: dicht opeengepakt, bijna struikelend over hun eigen bezweringen in het titelnummer en in In Times of Darkness. Het is een woordenvloed die aan Lord Sabathan doet denken, een litanie zonder adempauze.
Waar Furor the Blackest Nights Imperium het tempo terugschroeft, verschuift het ritueel van bezwering naar processie. De maatvoering vertraagt, de synths kruipen dichterbij en wat overblijft is een langzame uitputting van het licht: een kille, kerkerachtige rouwstoet zonder haast.
De geest van vroege Emperor en Dimmu Borgir waart voortdurend door deze opname. Vernieuwing lijkt hier van geen belang; het duo herbouwt bewust een middeleeuws schimmenrijk vol occulte grandeur, verlaten koninkrijken en maanverlichte wouden, met een oprechtheid die verder reikt dan welke overdadige productie ook. Precies in die soberheid schuilt de kracht van deze maskerade. Een opzichtig spektakel blijft achterwege; in de plaats daarvan rijst een bezwering op uit een graf dat nooit volledig werd gesloten.
Na zeventien minuten zwijgt de ceremonie. Alleen het open graf blijft achter, wachtend op de volgende afdaling.

A crypt beneath American soil opens once more. Enthroning Nightfall, the duo behind this infernal ceremony, summons with The Infernal Masquerade a spirit that should have lain beneath the earth for decades, yet refuses to rest. Lord Nachzherer leads the ritual through voice, strings, and spectral layers of synthesizers, while Lord Avgrunn von Ravenlock lashes the drumheads in the background like a possessed gravedigger. Following the Shadowland Mysteries demo from 2024, this marks the duo’s first full invocation, released by Sonorous Night in collaboration with New Era Productions.
Four chants, spanning seventeen minutes and forty-nine seconds, form a séance in which the second wave of black metal is summoned back from its grave. Icy tremolo riffs twist like roots through frozen earth, while Nachzherer’s vocals pour over the listener like an incantation, densely packed, almost stumbling over their own syllables in the title track and In Times of Darkness. It is a torrent of words reminiscent of Lord Sabathan, a litany without a single breath.
Where Furor the Blackest Nights Imperium slows the pace, the ritual shifts from conjuration to procession. The rhythm decelerates, the synthesizers creep closer, and what remains is a slow exhaustion of the light: a cold, dungeon-like funeral procession without haste.
The spirit of early Emperor and Dimmu Borgir haunts this recording throughout. Innovation appears to hold little interest here; instead, the duo deliberately reconstructs a medieval realm of shadows filled with occult grandeur, abandoned kingdoms, and moonlit forests, with a sincerity that reaches further than any lavish production ever could. It is precisely within that restraint that this masquerade finds its strength. Ostentatious spectacle is left aside; in its place rises an incantation from a grave that was never fully sealed.
After seventeen minutes, the ceremony falls silent. Only the open grave remains, waiting for the next descent.
