Newcastle upon Tyne carries its past beneath the ground. Around 122 AD, when the Roman occupiers raised the fort of Pons Aelius here beside the wall that was meant to separate the empire from the barbarians, the first dungeons already lay beneath it. Today, from that very same ground emerges a cell of the mind, deeper and darker than the sandstone that once enclosed those first chambers. Evil Dungeon Crawler dug open that dungeon in 2023, when Envus allowed his alias, born from the world of science fiction and dark fantasy art, to grow into a fully fledged black metal project. What began as an alter ego for his fascination with art hardened into a gothic, depressive embodiment of despair, a spirit burrowing ever deeper into the earth.
With The Unending Vomiting of Northern Blasphemies, Envus leaves his solitary existence behind. Morgulbane mans the drums, Kilgore the guitars and Archaon the bass, and although the four have only been playing together for a short time, they sound eerily well attuned, as though they have spent years rehearsing in the same damp hole. Wulfhere Productions released the EP on 28 August 2026, digitally, on CD and cassette, and the first pressing vanished in no time, swallowed by an audience that appears larger than the band’s recognition beyond Newcastle would suggest.
The sound breathes a raw, misanthropic atmosphere. Venom and Hellhammer haunt the riffs like malevolent forefathers, yet something of their own crawls through it all, something that cannot be reduced to mere homage. The throat heard here is raw and unpolished, swollen with disgust, occasionally pierced by a shrieking solo that tears itself free from the tremolo pattern beneath it, only to drown once more in the darkness. The songs are short, purposeful and stripped of ornament, each track another chamber within the same cell.
Beyond Newcastle, the name has barely penetrated the surface, yet those who have already witnessed them speak of a live reputation greater than their level of recognition would suggest, and of a pressing that disappeared before most even knew it existed. With a sound this accomplished for a band still so young, the promise towers high above the anonymity.
Envus remains behind like a shadow in the darkness of Northumberland, nourished by the same soil that buried prisoners centuries ago, and what remains of him is little more than one long, retching breath that can no longer be held back.
