Drie nummers, eenenveertig minuten.

After the ambient excursion of Manifestaties van de ontworteling (2024), Fluisteraars retreats into black metal territory on its sixth album. Active since 2009, the Gelderland duo has never remained confined to a single label for long, from Cascadian black metal to Urfaust. The breakthrough came with Bloem (2020), followed by the naturalistic, improvisational direction of Gegrepen door de Geest der Zielsontluiking (2021) and the multi-year series De Kronieken van het Verdwenen Kasteel. Jacht der Mysteriën comes closest to where that final trilogy left off.
Three tracks, forty-one minutes. Dark forests, desolate marshlands around Bennekom, local legends and will-o’-the-wisps as raw material. The familiar forest suddenly feels strange here, as if something is moving between the trees but never reveals itself.
Grondeloos Donkere Bossen builds long, incantatory guitar patterns over a restless undercurrent of drums and bass. The repetition becomes hypnotic and slowly pulls you along, carried by ambient and electronic layers that keep a dormant darkness beneath the surface.
More vicious and turbulent, Condities der Afstraffing still gives its riffs plenty of room to breathe. A Drudkh-like undertone hangs heavily over the track. Small shifts in rhythm and guitar tone keep it constantly moving. Around the two-and-a-half-minute mark, a melodic surge emerges that ranks among the album’s most compelling moments.
Zwarte Zomermaan is given the most room to unfold. The guitars slowly stretch out and the band’s atmospheric side is allowed free rein. The sense of menace remains, low and persistent. A vision slowly sinking back into the night from which it came.
Core duo M. Koops and B. Mollema chose to record the album together with drummer Nico de Wit and bassist T. Cochrane, who also produced the record, as a full live band in a single take. You can hear that choice: the musicians constantly react to one another, breathing in the same rhythm. The recordings were subsequently fed through the hollow cylinder of an abandoned water tower, giving the sound a strange sense of space, as if the music does not quite inhabit the same room as the listener. The sharp edges have been worn down. Nowhere does it sound polished.
Jacht der Mysteriën returns to black metal and finds different forms within it once again. Fluisteraars knows this forest well by now, but apparently not well enough to stop wandering deeper into it.
