The Dutch Folteraar has risen from the ashes to scourge humanity once more. Since their nihilistic manifesto Vertellingen van een donkere eeuw, the silence held for a decade, if we ignore a stray collection of leftover from 2018. Mastermind K., purveyor of all obscurity behind the underground tape empire The Throat, has reopened the crypt. The paths with former drummer B. have since parted, and in his place K. has found a new companion in G. (a rhythmic executioner from the Limburg underground, known from Witchfukker and Praefator) to dictate the rhythms of damnation.
The result of this alliance is Demo MMXXVI, an analog sonic corrosion dumped onto cassette under catalogue number KEEL200. Bruegel’s The Triumph of Death adorns the cover like an ominous threat. This is twenty-six minutes of pure, auditory rot.
The tape first vomits out “Intrede,” after which the listener is buried alive beneath three untitled, grim compositions of roughly eight minutes each (“Untitled I, II and III”). The venomous punk vibe of old has been largely mutilated away. In 2026, Folteraar opts for a far filthier, more suffocating sound. The production is gritty and rumbling; it sounds as if the amplifiers are dying in a damp, leaking crypt or a silted-up mineshaft where all oxygen vanished long ago.
This time, the true terror lies in the hypnotic cadence. The drums hammer in monotonous, almost neurotic patterns that batter the listener numb and drag them into a lethargic trance. Above it, guitar lines wail like rusted wire slicing through the eardrum. K.’s vocals mutate from rancid, choking shrieks into clear, ice-cold declamations, and it’s precisely those sermons that lend the music a deathly, liturgical character. Like Germany’s Sacris Ritus Vermes, Folteraar performs no ordinary songs, but a pitch-black religious mass reeking of incense and decay. It breathes the possessed spirit of the Norwegian Nidrosian scene (think Mare), yet drowned deep in the mud and filth of the Dutch underground.
Demo MMXXVI is a rancid, hostile wall of sound that spits out every trace of modernity. It is once again proof that K., after ten years of radio silence, remains a fixture of the Dutch sewer underground. This is ice-cold misanthropy for the few who dare embrace the absolute void.
