De naam Hangatyr verwijst naar Odin, de Gehangen God, symbool van zelfopoffering en inzicht door pijn. Vanuit dat beeld voert deze Thüringse horde haar pagan black metal uit als een oud ritueel, doordrongen van eerbied voor natuur en lot. Hun vierde album Sumpf der Fäule verscheen in eigen beheer en vormt een zuivere bezwering van de noordse geest, rauw, melodisch en gehard door discipline.
De plaat opent met “Sumpf der Fäule”, waar ijzige synths en gelaagde gitaren zich oprichten tot een vloed van geluid. De toon is direct: helder, koud, en gedragen door melodie. “Eine Wahrheit” ontbrandt in snelheid en vuur, met snijdende riffs en nauwgezette percussie die de militaristische hartslag van het album bepalen.
“Leichenmahl” vertraagt tot een zware, drassige stroom; de stem van Silvio klinkt als een bezwering in de mist, bijgestaan door een bas die diep door de grond zindert. “Es webe Nacht” herneemt het ritme van het woud, melodisch, met heidense grandeur en het gevoel van oude symbolen die in vlammen worden hertekend.
Met “Fatales Gedeih” eert Hangatyr de Scandinavische wortel: tremolo’s, precisie, en melodieën die zich verheffen boven de strijd. De afsluiter “Dämmerung” laat alles terugzakken in nevel; de laatste tonen klinken als het uitdoven van vuur in nat hout.

The name Hangatyr refers to Odin, the Hanged God, a symbol of sacrifice and knowledge gained through suffering. From that image, this Thuringian horde performs its pagan black metal as an ancient rite, steeped in reverence for nature and fate. Their fourth album Sumpf der Fäule, released independently, stands as a pure invocation of the northern spirit — raw, melodic, and shaped by discipline.
The album opens with “Sumpf der Fäule”, where icy synths and layered guitars rise into a surge of sound. The tone is immediate, clear, and cold, carried by melody. “Eine Wahrheit” ignites with speed and fire, its sharp riffs and precise percussion forming the heartbeat of the record.
“Leichenmahl” descends into a heavy, swamp-like current. Silvio’s voice resounds as an incantation in the mist, supported by a bass that trembles through the soil. “Es webe Nacht” moves with the rhythm of the forest, melodic and solemn, as if ancient symbols are being redrawn in flame.
With “Fatales Gedeih”, Hangatyr honors the Scandinavian root — tremolos, precision, and melodies that rise above the fray. The closer “Dämmerung” sinks back into fog, its final tones fading like fire dying in wet wood.
Produced by Alexander Dietz, the sound remains organic and clear, without distance or embellishment. Sumpf der Fäule breathes conviction, restraint, and reverence for the rough essence of pagan black metal. A ritual of cold, earth, and faith.
