Hertogenwald takes its name from the ancient Hertogenwald, the vast forest that gradually dissolves into the mist-laden peatlands of the High Fens. A landscape where history, nature and silence merge, where time itself seems to follow a different rhythm. That same spirit has haunted the music of Alrinack, Guido Saint Roch and S. Nihil since 2007. Three musicians deeply rooted in the Franco-Belgian underground, with paths crossing projects such as Ysengrin, Eole Noir, Nartvind, Ruines Humaines and Vils Serpents. The demo Esprit tellurique primitif and the splits with Orkblut and Regnum Tenebrarum marked the band’s first milestones. Through Medieval Prophecy Records, the first full-length chapter finally emerges: Archéombres.
Archéombres unfolds much like the High Fens themselves. From a distance they appear still and impenetrable. Those who move through them slowly discover depth, texture and hidden life. Hertogenwald demands the same devotion from its listener. The music keeps its secrets carefully concealed, revealing them only little by little.
That journey begins with Sous un ciel mourant. S. Nihil’s drums initially evoke a sense of bewilderment. Their flat, distant sound rubs against expectations, deliberately positioning itself beyond the familiar contours of black metal. With repeated listens, that first impression gradually changes. The drums settle into place, as though they could never have sounded any other way. The feeling of estrangement fades. Understanding grows.
Compositionally, Hertogenwald constantly ventures into unfamiliar terrain. Dissonance, unusual melodic turns and subtle traces of industrial, electronics and darkwave continuously shift the music’s centre of gravity. The experimental approach flows naturally throughout the album, giving Archéombres a remarkably distinct identity. At no point does experimentation feel like an end in itself. Every element serves the same underlying atmosphere.
Alrinack’s vocals complete that vision. Hoarse outbursts, spoken passages in French and whispered recitations draw the listener ever deeper into a world where nature, shadow and mystery converge. Every layer reinforces the same hushed atmosphere that lingers over the entire album like a thin veil of mist.
Nearly twenty years after its formation, Hertogenwald finally assumes its first full-length form. Archéombres demands time, attention and repeated wanderings. Just as the mist above the High Fens slowly reveals its contours, this debut gradually unveils its true nature with every return. That is where the album’s greatest strength resides.
