English version
Four names with a long history carved into the blackened stone return to a time when black metal had yet to write its laws. Hexbane brings together The Magus, George Emmanuel, Tas Danazoglou and Faust, musicians who need little introduction and carry decades of history between them. From Hell consists of two tracks and reaches back towards the original flame.
The title track makes that clear from the start. Forceful drums drive the song forward, icy riffs cut through the mix and the voice of The Magus sounds venomous and unmistakable. The riffs carry the cold bite of old black metal, with short, wailing solos shooting through them. The production is clear, powerful and contemporary: the past is invoked with the means of today.
Nefarious Spells ventures deeper into the darkness. The pace drops into mid-tempo and a threatening undercurrent creeps into the riffs, with The Magus once again leaving his mark. The guitars gain depth and tension until the track erupts halfway through: the pace surges, the aggression intensifies and the vocals grow fiercer. Afterwards, the incantation sinks back into the slower rhythm with which it began. The movement is simple and tightly executed.
These are four musicians who experienced black metal’s formative years themselves, and it shows in the guitar work. The simplicity is deliberate, with all those years of experience seeping through the performance.
Two tracks are enough to let something old crawl back into the open. From Hell carries the old spirit in a clear body of the present.
