Since 2015, Malefica has operated from Germany, a dark core that has steadily carved out its own path through the years. Following the debut EP Ancient Burial Mounds in 2016 and the full-length Sabbath of Darkness in 2020, the band returns with a new manifestation, brief yet all-consuming, and for the first time strengthened by Spanish blood: two original compositions and a conjuration of Samael’s classic Worship Him, barely twenty-two minutes altogether, yet somehow carrying the weight of a complete rite.
The opening fragment is no introduction; it is an invocation. A voice from a forgotten witch trial resounds, archaic and solemn, an accusation of Walpurgis Night rituals, a pact with the Devil, a broken blood oath, betrayal of the coven. Before the first note of The Night of Paralysis sounds, the atmosphere has already been poisoned. When M.’s guitars finally erupt, they do so with an abrasive harshness that adorns nothing and mutilates everything, a rawness that those familiar with Lunar Chalice and Spectral Whisper will immediately recognise as familiar territory. Noxathra’s rhythm is warlike and heavy, the bass rumbles like disturbed ground beneath the feet, while subtle keyboards burrow beneath it all, deepening the ritual character without ever overpowering it. Halfway through the track, that tension breaks open: the synths take over, briefly but effectively, pushing everything even deeper into obscurity.
Lucifogo, the latest addition to the line-up and known from Messe de Minuit, enters the realm of Malefica here for the first time. His voice, absent from the previous manifestations, carries the rite onward where the instruments have left it, primitive and convincing at once, a liberating force, a malevolent presence that effortlessly settles into the old body of Malefica. The title track continues along the same path without restraint, pitch-black black metal unconcerned with refinement and hitting its mark precisely because of it.
The closing track, a rendition of Samael’s Worship Him, is barely recognisable as a cover. Malefica completely absorbs the song into their own language, allowing it to merge seamlessly with what came before, as an organic part of the same ritual. Those who know the roots will recognise the spirit of Samael and Necromantia, which Malefica bends into their own Spanish-German darkness.
Three tracks, twenty-two minutes, not a second too much. The Coming of the Entity is a summoning that does not repeat itself, nor does it need to.
