Toch klinkt hier niets glad of gepolijst.

Behind the name Mélancolie du Dhampir stands Countess Valentina Carmilla Iskariot from North Carolina, USA. Following the 2025 debut Amor and splits with Visonfethacsis and Cœur de Ronces, Noblesse marks her second full-length, released through her own Oakheart Productions. Seven tracks in which vampiric romance, morbid desires and an almost unbearable melancholy embrace one another. Anyone expecting nothing but sorrowful, slow-moving black metal is in for a surprise.
A crying woman’s voice opens “She of My Blood”, before a harrowing scream and a barrage of blast beats tear the silence to shreds. The guitars dart in every direction without ever losing their grip on the melody. Carmilla piles guitar harmonies on top of one another, at times reaching heroic proportions and recalling the exuberance of power metal rather than conventional melodic black metal. Yet nothing here sounds slick or polished. The production is raw, the drums rage relentlessly, and above it all a voice shrieks and wails, at times almost moaning in anguish as it cuts through the music. Beauty and filth in the same breath, and somehow it holds together.
“Le baiser du sang” builds on that foundation. Venomous riffs alternate with melodic outbursts, while the guitar parts constantly twist and turn. Beyond the tremolo riffs, Carmilla regularly unleashes a solo that gives her dexterity and sense of melody plenty of room to shine. The guitar work also takes centre stage in “Hollow Heart”. The music assumes an almost triumphant character, while the vocals sound as though the singer is drowning in her own sorrow. That tension between triumph and ruin returns in every track.
The lyrics are steeped in blood. Menstruation, forbidden carnal desires, self-mutilation and death recur throughout. “She of My Blood” suggests an incestuous bond, while “Le baiser du sang” intertwines love with a willing surrender to death. “Hollow Heart” is a desperate plea to a beloved without whom the narrator rots beneath the earth. Carmilla cloaks her words in vampiric imagery, but behind these blood-soaked scenes lies an obsessive love in which desire and destruction can scarcely be told apart.
“Lunatic Euphoria” pushes that madness further, with frantic guitar work and harmonies that take unexpected turns. The shorter “Noble Blood, Spirit Resonance” ranks among the album’s strongest tracks. The guitars tumble over one another, accelerate, briefly pull back and then burst forth again in a torrent of melodies. The solo cuts and sings at the same time. In less than four minutes, Carmilla crams in as much guitar work as others might spread across an entire album, yet every twist falls into place.
On “Dog Woman”, the morbid eroticism takes a distinctly sadistic turn. Scars are torn open, pain becomes pleasure, and remorse does nothing to restrain the cruelty. The music charges ahead relentlessly, propelled by exuberant guitar harmonies. Closing track “Consanguinamorous Wretch” stretches beyond seven minutes and takes us lyrically through misty forests, the inner chambers of a castle and an empty grave. Carmilla never lets her guitar rest, while her tortured vocals make the despair almost tangible.
Anyone who associates melodic black metal exclusively with the familiar Scandinavian examples will be taken aback by the exuberant guitar parts and unusual melodic excursions. The raw production keeps everything firmly rooted in the underground, while the vocals never allow the music to lose its grim character. Carmilla’s guitar playing frequently approaches the heroic, only for her voice to drag everything back into misery.
Mélancolie du Dhampir is an eccentric presence within the American black metal underground. Purists may struggle to swallow some of these melodic twists, but it is precisely that unrestrained approach that gives Noblesse its character. An unexpected and thoroughly enjoyable discovery.
