When the Catalan entity behind Messe De Minuit unleashed their debut demo Invocation upon the underground in 2024, they immediately left a deep impression. Behind the incantatory keyboards of that first release stood Eosforos, a musician who had already earned his stripes in the extreme scene through projects such as 13th Moon and the occult black metal phenomenon Gzekhratüs. At his side were vocalist Lucifogo and Crucifier, the latter deeply rooted in the same Spanish underground through the likes of Nagyszeben, Nigromancer and Unholy Black Pentagram. Now, two years later, the band returns with the long-awaited 7″ EP The Neophyte. Like its predecessor, it appears through Iron Bonehead Productions, with the familiar core joined by guitarist C. and drummer Lord Mortuorum. The result is two tracks steeped in a heavy, mist-shrouded melancholy, drawing the listener into a twilight realm from the very first second.
The entire EP is steeped in a crushing, sinister and melancholic atmosphere. Messe De Minuit resolutely embraces an incantatory mid-tempo approach, allowing the dynamics to build slowly and inexorably. The songs unfold without haste, carried by dragging guitar riffs that radiate an immense, solemn force. The sound is heavily inspired by the old Greek black metal of the early ’90s, that particular mystical current of which the true underground devotee can simply never get enough.
The A-side is consecrated by Necromantic Night, immediately plunging us into tangible, macabre horror. We follow a necromancer who ventures to a tomb at night, disturbs the rest of the dead and ultimately takes a skull destined for the altar. Beneath it all, Lord Mortuorum lays down a crushing rhythmic foundation; the slow cadence feels like inevitable footsteps towards an open grave. The production here is sublime: pure and raw enough to honour the underground roots, yet open enough to preserve the brooding, magical atmosphere. The keyboards hang over everything like a cold occult veil, while a blazing guitar solo leads the track towards its triumphant, terrifying conclusion.
On the B-side follows the title track, The Neophyte. Conceptually, the track follows a protagonist who joins an occult sect and, driven by hubris, steals a Ouija board in pursuit of forbidden knowledge. Musically, that descent takes on an equally dark form. Eosforos demonstrates his absolute mastery of the keyboards here: his atmospheric passages bring tremendous depth and beautifully fill the spaces between the riffs, restrained enough never to descend into unnecessary bombast. Lucifogo’s vocals form the perfect guide through this downfall: a dry, theatrical growl, precisely the voice one would expect from a tormented spirit. As the story approaches its fatal conclusion, the track opens up into a melodic guitar solo. It carries an unmistakable classic heavy metal influence, its restrained place within the overall sound reinforcing the dark tragedy of the song.
The Neophyte is a triumph for devotees of the vintage Hellenic sound. Messe De Minuit rises above the level of a mere exercise in style through the perfect balance of synths, Lucifogo’s dry vocals and the melodic solos. The result is a consistent, dark and atmospheric work of art. Whoever manages to secure one of the 200 physical copies will have a true underground gem in their hands.
