English version
Read the title backwards and Walpurgis emerges, the night when witches gather in their circle. Mischievous Wraith, Belgian servants of witchcraft and occultism, have delivered a full-length grimoire following their Hemlock and Belladonna demo (2023). Medieval Prophecy Records opens the gate. Bassist Zabrava drew the cover in raw ink: a naked woman with wildly flowing hair stretches her arm towards the heavens, enclosed within the lines of a pentagram, while two black wolves stand guard at her feet.
The roots reach deep into the French school. Nehëmah and Osculum Infame, two French names born from the same tainted soil, cast their shadows over the grim riffing and ritualistic demeanour. The French language also creeps into titles such as “Notre pacte” and “La nuit verte”. In “A toad, a cat, a crow”, a French-speaking voice whispers an incantation, as though the sabbath were gathering around a fire.
Nemurtvi shrieks with an icy chill through the night, his voice like frost upon a gravestone. At times, his screams give way to a declamatory delivery, a curse hurled from a pulpit. Beneath the riffs, the synthesizers of guest musician Demonichen Dukh creep forward like smoke rising from an extinguished sacrificial bowl. On “Sinister woods wedding” and the brief interlude “Faustinas einleitung”, the keyboards cast a veil of mist over the proceedings.
“Seminal cult of Aphrodite” descends into a smouldering tempo. “Lupercalian dream” launches a fierce assault, its hallucinogenic riffs digging in until repetition becomes a trance. “The horny and the horned” is a filthy, thoroughly enjoyable rendition of Finnish band Impaled Nazarene, steeped in Mischievous Wraith’s own foul essence.
In the Walloon south, the Ancient Hounds circle is stirring, with Crypts of Wallachia and Selenite Scrolls among its ranks, and the wolves on the cover seem to know it already. Thcansigruplaw adds another howl to that chorus, and Medieval Prophecy Records has once again unearthed a record from the depths.
