Nachtgnawer knaagt sinds 2022 vanuit Tampere, in het Finse Pirkanmaa, aan alles wat nog overeind staat. Na de demo Eternal Curse of the Blood, de samenwerking Unholy Vampyric Supremacy en het live-album Ritualia Vivorum Mortuorum bijt de band zich via Purity Through Fire vast in vijf nummers en twintig minuten. Satanisme, dood en vampirisme vormen het decor, Mors Vincit Omnia het motto.
Hondsagressief en furieus raast Medieval Devourer voorbij. Melodieuze tremolo’s jagen vooruit en daarboven blaft een ijselijke stem, soms hysterisch, soms geschift. Solo’s scheuren door het geweld en in de riffs schemert een vleugje heavy metal. Het Finse zwart van Satanic Warmaster klinkt door in de gitaarlijnen, koud en bijtend.
Het hoogtepunt is Stench of the Ancient Towers. Een epische tremolo opent het nummer, solo’s breken erdoorheen en de vocalen ontaarden in pure waanzin. Dan keert de tremolo terug, wolven huilen en het gaat op volle snelheid verder. De woede druipt eraf en het geblaf houdt aan. Tegen het einde glijden synths binnen, vergezeld van een klavecimbel dat een middeleeuws tintje over al dat geweld legt. Afsluiter Desecrator is kort en razend, met een snijdende solo.
Van Haustein mixte en masterde de EP. Bas en keyboards zijn goed te horen en de riffs behouden hun scherpte. De hoes is van Warhead Art.
Wie zich achter de bijnamen schuilhoudt, is niet geweten: S.S Blutsauger (Breath of Death and the Mallets of Doom), Caenum Tepes (Bleeding 6-String Visions of the Dark Witchery), Lord Profanus Dracul (Vicious Wailing of Ensanguined Spears), Coffinplague (Thicksteel Clang from Beneath the Fosse-Mud) en Krellwulf (Glyphs and rimes of Antediluvian Warlocks). Zulke titels komen uit een duistere smidse waar het kwaad met een scheve grijns wordt vereerd, en ze trekken de mondhoeken omhoog nog voor de eerste tremolo klinkt.
Medieval Devourer is al enige tijd uit en bleef spijtig genoeg op de plank liggen. Tijd om hem eraf te halen en de tremolo’s je te laten verslinden.

Since 2022, Nachtgnawer have been gnawing away at everything still standing in Tampere, in Finland’s Pirkanmaa region. Following the demo Eternal Curse of the Blood, the collaboration Unholy Vampyric Supremacy and the live album Ritualia Vivorum Mortuorum, the band now sink their teeth into five tracks and twenty minutes through Purity Through Fire. Satanism, death and vampirism set the scene, with Mors Vincit Omnia as their motto.
Ferociously aggressive and utterly furious, Medieval Devourer tears past at full force. Melodic tremolos race forward, topped by an icy, barking voice, at times hysterical, at others completely deranged. Solos rip through the violence, and a touch of heavy metal lurks within the riffs. The Finnish blackness of Satanic Warmaster echoes through the guitar lines, cold and biting.
The highlight is Stench of the Ancient Towers. An epic tremolo opens the track, solos tear through it and the vocals descend into sheer madness. Then the tremolo returns, wolves howl and everything charges ahead at full speed. Rage drips from every note and the barking never lets up. Towards the end, synths creep in, accompanied by a harpsichord that casts a medieval touch over all the violence. Closing track Desecrator is short and furious, armed with a cutting solo.
Van Haustein handled the mixing and mastering of the EP. Bass and keyboards are clearly audible, while the riffs retain their sharp edge. The cover artwork is by Warhead Art.
Who hides behind these pseudonyms remains unknown: S.S Blutsauger (Breath of Death and the Mallets of Doom), Caenum Tepes (Bleeding 6-String Visions of the Dark Witchery), Lord Profanus Dracul (Vicious Wailing of Ensanguined Spears), Coffinplague (Thicksteel Clang from Beneath the Fosse-Mud) and Krellwulf (Glyphs and rimes of Antediluvian Warlocks). Such titles could only have been forged in some dark smithy where evil is worshipped with a crooked grin, and they are enough to raise the corners of your mouth before the first tremolo even strikes.
Medieval Devourer has been out for quite some time and has unfortunately been gathering dust on the shelf. Time to pull it down and let the tremolos devour you.
