Wanneer het gaat over necromantische bezweringen binnen de black metalscene, is het moeilijk om het rottende relikwie genaamd Necromantic Worship te negeren. Sinds hun herrijzenis uit de crypt in 2023 heeft het Nederlandse gezelschap de vlam van de Helleense traditie opnieuw fel doen oplaaien, en deze nieuwe Promo 2025 laat geen twijfel bestaan over hun intenties: het pad richting een eerste langspeler is geplaveid met duisternis, dode talen en occulte devotie.
De promo opent met “The Tempering of Erebos”, een nummer dat meteen diep de tempel van de Griekse black metal binnentreedt. Niet toevallig werd de tekst geleverd door The Magus van Necromantia, wat de connectie met de bron des verderfs nog versterkt. Wat meteen opvalt, is hoe de vocalen van Ghûllzaraën geëscaleerd zijn tot demonisch gegorgel dat eerder klinkt als een bezwering dan als zang. Xarangorth’s helse screams wakkeren dat gevoel alleen maar aan. Dit is geen muziek die je opzet tijdens het zondags ontbijt – dit is bezeten klankkunst.
De invloed van Necromantia blijft prominent aanwezig, met loodzware baspartijen die meer doen dan enkel begeleiden: ze voeren de composities aan als een processionele doodsmars. Toch is deze promo geen simpele herkauwing van het verleden. Met melodieuze gitaarsolo’s van o.a. S. Iblis en Pz. Kpfw, bekend van onder meer Gouffre en Dikasterion, wordt er een subtiel vleugje warmte aan de sfeer toegevoegd. Herjann (Heidens Hart) levert bovendien enkele vocale bijdragen aan het afsluitende “Chtulhu Fhtagn”, waarin heldere zanglijnen en kerkorgels een hallucinante climax creëren.
De productie, verzorgd door Herjann, klinkt transparanter dan bij vorige releases, zonder de rauwheid en mystiek te verliezen. Dit is nog steeds zwartmetaal dat druipt van het kaarsvet en oude bijbels ontheiligt. Enkel het drumgeluid – elektronisch en soms wat hoekig – kan hier en daar een klein beetje uit de toon vallen, al past dat bevreemdende effect vreemd genoeg wel bij het esoterische karakter van de release.
Bijzonder intrigerend is “Walpurgisnacht”, een quasi-instrumentale track die klinkt alsof een heidens ritueel in het woud op band werd vastgelegd. Geen screams of riffs, maar windvlagen, nachtdieren en heilige ambient vormen de kern. Het echoot de psychedelische ambient van het vroegere “The Calling…”, maar dan minder demonisch en meer etherisch.
Het blijft wat gissen welke nummers straks op het volledige album zullen verschijnen, maar dat deze promo zowel een waardige terugkeer als een stap vooruit is voor Necromantic Worship, staat vast. Wie zweert bij oude Necromantia, Varathron of de rituele occulte sfeer van Thou Art Lord, heeft hier een nieuw altaar gevonden om voor te knielen.

When it comes to necromantic incantations within the black metal underground, few names rise from the tomb as feverishly as Necromantic Worship. Since their 2023 resurrection, this Dutch cult has rekindled the black Hellenic flame with fervent devotion — and Promo 2025 leaves no doubt: the path to a first full-length is paved with darkness, dead languages, and occult allegiance.
The promo opens with “The Tempering of Erebos,” a track that immediately descends deep into the sanctuary of Hellenic black metal. Notably, the lyrics were penned by The Magus (Necromantia), forging a direct link to the infernal source. Vocalist Ghûllzaraën escalates into possessed growls that sound less like singing and more like ritualistic invocation, while Xarangorth’s hellish screams fuel the ceremony. This is no music for Sunday morning — this is sound as sorcery.
The Necromantia influence is unmistakable, especially in the crushing basslines that lead the compositions like a processional death march. Yet this is far from mere worship of the past. Through melodic solos by S. Iblis and Pz. Kpfw (of Gouffre, Dikasterion, and others), there’s a strange warmth injected into the cryptic haze. Herjann (Heidens Hart) also contributes vocals on the closing track “Chtulhu Fhtagn,” where solemn chants and church organs build toward a fevered climax.
The production, handled by Herjann, is clearer than on past recordings — yet the ritualistic rawness and candlewax-drenched mysticism remain intact. Only the electronic drum sound occasionally feels slightly mechanical, but oddly enough, this artificiality reinforces the esoteric and detached nature of the material.
One particularly fascinating piece is “Walpurgisnacht,” a quasi-instrumental that sounds like a pagan rite captured deep within the woods. No screams, no riffs — only wind, nocturnal creatures, and sacred ambience. It echoes the psychedelic ritualism of their earlier “The Calling…”, though here the mood is less demonic, more ethereal.
Which of these hymns will appear on the full-length remains uncertain — but one thing is clear: Promo 2025 marks both a worthy return and an inspired evolution. For those who kneel before Necromantia, Varathron, or the occult spirit of Thou Art Lord, this is a new altar at which to tremble.
