In de zoute, industriële nevel van de havenstad Piraeus ontwaakte in 1990 een gitzwarte, infernale entiteit. Oprichters Grigoris Expulsion Angel en Panos Horrendus Infernal Grave smeedden destijds een nihilistische visie die ver verwijderd bleef van commerciële tendensen. Gevoed door tape-traders en obscure fanzines groeide Nergal uit tot een cultnaam die enkel in de diepste krochten van de extreme underground werd gefluisterd. Na een abrupte winterslaap die in 1996 begon en een volledige 10 jaar duurde, keerde de formatie in 2006 terug om de vlam van hun erfenis opnieuw aan te wakkeren. Het recente album Blessed bewijst dat het vuur van de Griekse catacomben nog steeds brandt.
Met deze heruitgave op Medieval Prophecy Records wordt hun vroegste, meest primitieve periode opnieuw uit de schaduw gehaald. De vinylpersing verenigt na decennia de historische opnames tot één bezwerend geheel. Centraal staan de onheilspellende klanken van de eerste EP De Vermis Mysteriis uit 1993 en de inmiddels legendarische split-opnames met Funeral Urn (Magie Cérémonielle). Deze opnames ademen een rauwe, verstikkende sfeer vol verval, occultisme en pure extremiteit. Het zijn essentiële documenten uit de begintijd van de bezeten Helleense black metal, waarin mystiek en sonische agressie op een unieke, basgedreven manier samensmolten.
De ware bezwering van deze release schuilt echter in het archiefmateriaal dat opnieuw aan het duister werd onttrokken. Naast een obscure promotrack bevat de plaat drie rauwe live-registraties die in 1991 in Athene op tape werden vereeuwigd. Dit materiaal vangt Nergal in hun meest ongecontroleerde oervorm, balancerend op de grens tussen brute death metal en de eerste erupties van black metal. De chaotische intensiteit en ongepolijste productie transporteren de luisteraar rechtstreeks naar de begindagen van de scene, toen tape-trading, obscure correspondentie en compromisloze rebellie nog het hart van de underground vormden.

Founders Grigoris Expulsion Angel and Panos Horrendus Infernal Grave forged a nihilistic vision far removed from commercial tendencies. Fueled by tape traders and obscure fanzines, Nergal grew into a cult name whispered only within the deepest crypts of the extreme underground. After an abrupt slumber beginning in 1996 that lasted an entire decade, the formation returned in 2006 to reignite the flame of its legacy. The recent album Blessed proves that the fire of the Greek catacombs still burns fiercely.
With this reissue through Medieval Prophecy Records, their earliest and most primitive era is dragged back from the shadows. The vinyl pressing unites these historical recordings after decades into one immersive invocation. At the center stand the ominous sounds of the first EP De Vermis Mysteriis from 1993 and the now legendary split recordings with Funeral Urn (Magie Cérémonielle). These recordings breathe a raw, suffocating atmosphere steeped in decay, occultism and pure extremity. They remain essential documents from the earliest days of possessed Hellenic black metal, where mysticism and sonic aggression merged through a uniquely bass-driven approach.

Alongside an obscure promo track, the record contains three raw live recordings captured on tape in Athens in 1991. This material preserves Nergal in their most uncontrolled primordial form, balancing on the threshold between brutal death metal and the first eruptions of black metal. The chaotic intensity and unpolished production transport the listener directly into the earliest days of the scene, when tape trading, obscure correspondence and uncompromising rebellion still formed the beating heart of the underground.
Wrapped in a heavy, raw production and completed with a historical archive, this LP stands as a tangible relic for collectors devoted to the ancient Greek underworld. Four pages filled with forgotten fanzine flyers and rare band photographs from the early years strengthen the feeling that a fragment of underground history has been unearthed once again. A jet-black document from an era when the Hellenic scene still sounded like a cursed echo rising from the deepest catacombs.
