English version
Between Belo Jardim and Lajedo, in the interior of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, Ocultus Funerus was formed in 2003. Twenty-three years later, Morthoned Specthron, Ijon Lord Mortus and Manthus Sabathan still bear the same names, still gathered around the same fire. Little remains from those early days beyond a rehearsal recording, Mensageiros de Satanás, eleven tracks featuring the same trio that carries Invocando Encantos Ancestrais today. Their trail through the past two decades is difficult to follow. What rises to the surface are scattered remnants, and now this album.
Six incantations are enough to open the door. Vastidão Terrestre first raises a solemn threshold: solemn synths, acoustic guitars and obscure whispers, a silence before the storm. Only then does the record break open, with something of that weight lingering behind. Atmosphere does not function as decoration here; it creeps between the guitars, hangs behind the voice and lingers like a cold presence. Here the title almost takes literal form: Invocando Encantos Ancestrais, the invocation of ancient spells. As though something buried deep beneath the dust of the intervening decades is being called by name once more.
Morthoned Specthron is a story unto himself. His voice continually assumes different forms, solemn and conjuring like a forbidden liturgy, only to split open into a shriek before sinking into something more bestial. Especially in that ceremonial guise, the album takes on something deeply unsettling: words meant to be heard on the other side.
The instrumental body refuses to imprison itself within a single tempo. The music accelerates, withdraws, changes shape and strikes again, keeping all six tracks in constant motion. Beneath it all the bass churns, regularly grinding its way to the surface, a filthy, tangible presence that adds another layer of unrest to the music. It is precisely when the tempo shifts that you realise how much life is moving beneath the skin of this record.
Ijon Lord Mortus likewise refuses to treat his guitar solely as a riff weapon. Amid the violence, lead lines emerge, breaking free and beginning to coil above the whole, notes that search, rise and curl like smoke around the other instruments. When Morthoned lays his voice across them, something genuinely unholy seems to seep through the cracks, a sound that continues crawling along the spine even after the song has ended.
The spirit of old Mystifier haunts the entire record, while the solemn synths and raw guitars repeatedly evoke Dimmu Borgir in the days of For All Tid. Those echoes lie deep within the black flesh of Invocando Encantos Ancestrais without suffocating Ocultus Funerus’ own dark breath.
O Bestial Hino Profano, A Batalha Amaldiçoada da Morte, Ocultas Filosofias, Invocando Encantos Ancestrais, O Portal do Inferno: the Portuguese titles alone anchor the identity of this record. The 2003 recording already carried titles such as O Portal, A Revelação and A Derrota do Céu. The distance of twenty-three years suddenly seems smaller than it does on paper. This record sounds like a history that has kept smouldering since 2003, when a single rehearsal was enough to leave a trace behind.
What unfolded in the shadows during the years between remains largely hidden from our sight. Perhaps, for now, that is how it should be. There is dust on these walls that cannot be applied after the fact, years that have continued breathing in the dark, and damn if they have not grown stronger there.
Perhaps that is precisely what makes this discovery so damned glorious. Ocultus Funerus had been festering somewhere beyond our field of vision all this time. Twenty-three years after that profane rehearsal, we have finally turned over the stone. Beneath it lay a black pearl. And it gleams only in the absence of light.
