Runaway Devils – Blood Must Be Shed to Enchant Your Head (2026) Review

(English version below)
Na de EP Beyond the Sight of Mortal Eyes laat Godz ov War Productions hun eerste langspeler los: Blood Must Be Shed to Enchant Your Head.

Sommige overgangen verlopen behoorlijk bruusk.

Dan dooft het vuur. “My Blood on His Hands” laat een ander gezicht zien.

Blood Must Be Shed to Enchant Your Head rammelt, ontspoort en zingt vals, en laat de ketel toch overkoken. Het bloed vloeit en de bezwering werkt.

Łódź, September 2022. Four students at the same music school are put together and discover a shared love of black metal, punk and dark aesthetics. Following the EP Beyond the Sight of Mortal Eyes, Godz ov War Productions unleashes their first full-length, Blood Must Be Shed to Enchant Your Head. Eleven tracks, and everything that can possibly bubble away in a witch’s cauldron goes into the brew. Garage rock, black punk, primitive black metal and Polish disco music melt together in the same concoction. The band calls it Black Raw ’n’ Roll.

From “Bloodsucker!!!” onwards, Runaway Devils couldn’t care less about what is acceptable and what is forbidden. The guitars rattle, the vocals fly in every direction and the compositions keep taking unexpected turns. At times, Violent Femmes seem to have wandered into a rehearsal room full of possessed punks, until an icy tremolo riff suddenly rises from the early Darkthrone school. The unpolished ferocity of She-Wolf regularly creeps through as well. The vocals deserve a chapter of their own: venomous black metal shrieks alternate with clean singing that doesn’t always stay in tune. Sometimes the witch sings downright off-key, and the guitars aren’t always in tune either. Yet there’s something disarming about this shameless messiness. The four play with a fire that can barely be contained.

“Everytime We Siege” marks the first peak of sheer mischief. Cascada’s Eurodance hit “Everytime We Touch” gets thoroughly butchered, with an ordinary singing voice duetting with a shrieking witch, while the music hangs somewhere between punk, metal and utter madness. At times it’s hilarious, and keeping a straight face becomes impossible. Then Polish disco polo joins the party. “Four Witches in Four Castles”, a reworking of “Cztery Osiemnastki” by Tomasz Niecik, proves that nothing is sacred to these four ladies. Disco and black metal under one roof, you have to come up with it.

Between these outbursts, black metal breaks through, surprisingly convincing. The guitars switch to raw, repetitive tremolo riffs and the vocals suddenly take on a grim undertone. A moment later, the tempo drops and garage rock and punk take over again. Some transitions are rather abrupt.

Then the fire dies down. “My Blood on His Hands” reveals another side of the band. The acoustic guitars lament, a mournful solo crawls across the strings and beneath the cauldron, only ashes still smoulder. The laughter fades. Closing track “Cicho! cicho to ty będziesz w grobie…” drags us into a fairy-tale world of curses, death and lost love. Synthesizers carry the story of a princess imprisoned in a tower, bringing the album to an end like a dark fairy tale after all those wild detours.

The production sounds raw and unpolished. The band deliberately chose this approach, wanting to sound just as rough on record as they do on stage. That explains the audible imperfections. The guitar work grates, certain vocal passages get on the nerves, and Runaway Devils demands a degree of tolerance for musical sloppiness. Clean vocals, technically accomplished playing and tightly constructed compositions are left standing outside the witches’ circle.

I keep listening with a broad grin on my face. Behind the witches’ hats, corpsepaint and theatrical poses burns a fiercely individual flame. Blood Must Be Shed to Enchant Your Head rattles, derails and sings off-key, yet still sends the cauldron boiling over. The blood flows, and the spell works.
