With Burning Devotion ontvouwt zich als een gesloten rite in drie fasen. Geen uitleg, geen afstand, enkel handeling. De muziek ademt oude Mayhem en draagt dezelfde beklemmende ernst die ook het werk van Mare kenmerkt: een gevoel van afgesloten ruimte, verstikking en rituele concentratie. Die lijn sluit aan bij de plechtige zwaarte van de Nidrosian bands, verankerd in een ruwe black/death-kern waarin intentie zwaarder weegt dan vorm. Evangelische gezangen openen de poorten. Daarna valt de massa binnen.
“Devotio Ardente” treedt aan met beukende drums, krakende riffs en een ronkende bas die het geheel verzwaart. De vocalen snijden onverbiddelijk door de klanklaag heen. De tekst functioneert als een gelofte, uitgesproken in vuur en overgave. De structuur blijft strak en doelgericht, met een vlammende tremolopassage die het nummer afsluit en de toewijding verzegelt.
“Tenebris Vacuum” zet in met een middentempo-pulse die gestaag wordt aangespannen. De gezangen bouwen spanning op, het tempo trekt aan, de satanische terreur verdicht zich. De tekst plaatst heiligheid onder druk en verklaart verzet tot zegening. Wanneer het hoogtepunt bereikt is, sterft het nummer langzaam weg onder orgels die de leegte markeren. De leadmelodie vlak voor de afsluiting blijft nadrukkelijk hangen.
“Vehemens Fide” vormt het zwaartepunt van de EP. Negen minuten devote ceremonie, strak en dwingend, met vlijmscherpe riffs en bevelende vocalen. Hier verschuift het perspectief: de entiteit spreekt zelf, zalft met vuur en zwavel, en verklaart heilig. Over de opening hangt een sluier die herinnert aan De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Het nummer ontvouwt zich in een gestage beweging richting een lange orgelprocessie die de rite sluit. Dit nummer klinkt iets doffer dan de voorgaande, wat de gesloten en plechtige sfeer verder verdiept.
De productie blijft donker en ongepolijst. De focus ligt op sfeer en intentie. Orgelpartijen fungeren als afsluitende handelingen, de gezangen houden een constante dreiging in stand. De gitaren klinken scherper dan op de vorige EP en zetten de agressie extra aan. De bas blijft prominent aanwezig en verankert het geheel in gewicht en diepte.
With Burning Devotion verschijnt via het onvolprezen Death Revelations. De EP is reeds digitaal beschikbaar via Bandcamp; in januari volgt de fysieke tape-editie. In drie nummers levert Sacris Ritus Vermes een compromisloze, intense en overtuigende EP af. Dit duo behoort zonder twijfel tot het sterkste wat de huidige underground te bieden heeft.

With Burning Devotion unfolds as a closed rite in three phases. No explanation, no distance, only action. The music breathes old Mayhem and carries the same suffocating gravity that also defines the work of Mare: a sense of sealed space, confinement, and ritual concentration. This line connects naturally with the solemn weight of the Nidrosian bands, anchored in a raw black/death core where intent outweighs form. Evangelical chants open the gates. Then the mass descends.
“Devotio Ardente” enters with pounding drums, cracking riffs, and a rumbling bass that weighs everything down. The vocals cut mercilessly through the layers. The text functions as a vow, spoken in fire and surrender. The structure remains tight and purposeful, ending with a blazing tremolo passage that seals the devotion.
“Tenebris Vacuum” begins with a mid-tempo pulse that is gradually tightened. The chants build tension, the tempo pulls forward, satanic terror condenses. The text places holiness under pressure and declares defiance a blessing. Once the peak is reached, the song slowly fades beneath organs that mark the void. The lead melody just before the closing remains firmly imprinted.
“Vehemens Fide” forms the EP’s center of gravity. Nine minutes of devoted ceremony, tight and commanding, with razor-sharp riffs and imperative vocals. Here the perspective shifts: the entity speaks itself, anoints with fire and sulfur, and declares holy. A veil recalling De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas hangs over the opening. The track moves steadily toward a long organ procession that closes the rite. This piece sounds slightly duller than the preceding tracks, deepening the sealed and solemn atmosphere.
The production stays dark and unpolished. The focus lies on atmosphere and intent. Organ parts act as closing gestures, the chants maintain a constant sense of threat. The guitars sound sharper than on the previous EP, driving the aggression harder. The bass remains prominent and anchors the whole in weight and depth.
With Burning Devotion is released via the acclaimed Death Revelations. The EP is already available digitally on Bandcamp; the physical tape edition follows in January. Across three tracks, Sacris Ritus Vermes delivers a uncompromising, intense, and convincing EP. This duo unquestionably ranks among the strongest the current underground has to offer.
