Somewhere beneath a stone that has not been moved for decades, something lies in wait. The path leading there does not reveal itself to those who seek, only to those who are called. That is precisely the feeling Promo MMXXVI evokes: as if a forgotten Hellenic recording from the 1990s had finally been lifted from its sarcophagus, decades too late and all the more compelling because of it.
Active since 2025 in the Netherlands, The Nameless Shrine confirms with this tape what its split with compatriots Necromantic Worship had already suggested: a profound kinship with the Hellenic forefathers, Necromantia and Varathron foremost among them. The duo of Zharuul of the Forbidden Spheres (vocals, guitars, keyboards) and Habitator Dunarum (guitars, drums, mixing and mastering) opens with a spoken-word excerpt taken from The Devil Rides Out, drawing a straight line from there into three fully realized invocations.
The production is raw and organic, steeped in an occult chill. Melodic bass lines form the foundation while keyboards and church organ fill the spaces left between the guitars. Slow, ritual passages alternate with faster eruptions, blast beats tearing open the earth before sinking back into solemn, measured tempos.
Sigils Beneath the Black Moon opens the gate with dragging riffs, melodic bass lines and keyboards drifting between the guitars like a cold mist. The composition breathes with an undercurrent of tension that never loosens its grip, drawing the listener ever deeper into the ritual.
Whispers of the Nameless Rite forms the dark centre of the tape. Measured passages dissolve into fierce eruptions before once again descending into a hypnotic ritual pace. Church organ and keyboards linger above the composition like incense, cloaking it in a sacred, almost liturgical aura.
Doctrine of the Unclean Fire closes the ceremony with an ever-thickening atmosphere in which every riff is allowed to unfold with deliberate care. Halfway through, a magnificent lead melody flares up like the final flame within an extinguished sanctuary. As the last notes fade, the lingering impression is that something ancient and concealed has briefly emerged from the depths, only to retreat once more into darkness.
The artwork, taken from Nikolay Ge’s The Witch of Endor (1857), perfectly complements the tape’s necromantic character. Devotees of old-school Hellenic black metal and Mortuary Drape will find a forgotten grave offering finally returned to daylight, as though it had waited in silence for its excavation all these years. Promo MMXXVI dissolves time itself. Seventeen minutes are enough to remember why Hellenic black metal once left such an indelible mark. A grin appears almost instinctively and stubbornly refuses to fade long after the final echo has died away.
