Törnen – Ulv av gammel natt (Demo 2026) Review

(English version below)

Wolf of the old night, so the title translates. Törnen digs open the grave of the early nineties and lets the freezing air escape. Five tracks, almost twenty-three minutes, and the clock stands still at an hour when black metal still sounded raw and morbid.

Behind Törnen stands Alex Poole, operating here as Azeruel, an American with a dark history in Chaos Moon, Häxanu, Krieg and Ringarë. He handles guitars, bass and keyboards, while his compatriot Vlkoslak takes care of the drums. Swedish musician Akwihurz provides vocals and additional keyboards. In 2024, the debut album Under korpens visdom appeared through Medieval Prophecy Records. Two years later, Törnen returns with this demo, released by Sonorous Night.

The guitars weave long, icy melodic lines through the tracks, alternating with dark, menacing riffs. Above them, the keyboards spread their sinister tones, at times solemn, at others drifting like mist across the riffs. Anyone who lost their heart to the early Dimmu Borgir of For All Tid, Covenant’s In Times Before the Light, Gehenna, or the young Behemoth of the magnificent The Return of the Northern Moon demo will recognise the roots of the old Norwegian and Polish black metal schools.

The recording sounds full and clear. The guitars retain their sharp edges, the keyboards are given plenty of room, and even when the instruments merge into one thick mass of sound, each remains distinguishable. The archaic character of the music thus remains firmly intact.

Akwihurz shrieks with malice and morbidity, almost possessed, his demonic, inhuman voice piercing through the sound. His screams erupt from a sealed crypt, casting an ominous shadow over the entire demo.

Even the cover belongs to another era: a solitary tree, battered by the wind, beneath a grey sky among barren trunks and dark rocks. Gothic lettering on grainy black and white, as though printed on a demo cassette thirty years ago.

Ulv av gammel natt speaks the language of the Norwegian and Polish underworld with utter conviction. The flame of old still burns here, and at the edge of the light, the wolf awaits.
