Badalona ligt niet ver van de zee, maar wat Unholy Black Pentagram oproept heeft niets van zilte lucht of zonlicht. Het is een plek waar bloed op steen droogt en waar bezweringen worden gefluisterd in talen die niemand meer wil verstaan. Deze Catalaanse formatie, actief sinds 2024, presenteert via WolfKult Religion haar eerste demo, Desecrating the Altars of Purity: Unholy Rituals of the Goatlord, en het is meteen duidelijk dat hier geen beginnelingen aan het werk zijn.
De namen achter de instrumenten verraden een netwerk dat diep door de Spaanse ondergrond loopt, en de titels die ze dragen zijn zelf al een litanie. Aan de bas staat de Heretic Servant of the Black Goat and Worshipper of Eternal Fire. Achter de drums huist de Invoker of the Black Arts and Bells of Darkness, terwijl de Bestial Infamator of the Great Firetrident de gitaar hanteert. Samen met de Crucifier of the Seven Infernal Seals of Baphomet, stem en toetsen tegelijk, komen hier bloedlijnen samen die onder meer door Nigromancer, Under the Moon, Messe de Minuit en Nagyszeben lopen. Elke titel is een bezwering op zich; samen vormen ze gestaltes die uit de crypte zijn opgestegen om deze rite te voltrekken. Wat op papier een debuut is, klinkt als het werk van doorgewinterde bezweerders die precies weten welke geesten ze oproepen.
Muzikaal grijpt de band terug naar het einde van de jaren tachtig en het begin van de jaren negentig, een periode waarin occulte black metal zich buiten Scandinavië ontwikkelde tot een eigen, duisterder dialect. De invloed van het vroege werk van Mystifier is voelbaar in de manier waarop primitieve agressie en ceremoniële zwaarte elkaar afwisselen, terwijl de ruwere uitbarstingen af en toe de barbaarsheid van Archgoat oproepen. Toetsenpartijen weven zich door de riffs als wierook door een crypte, nooit opdringerig, altijd sfeerbepalend. Het tempo blijft grotendeels ingetogen en dreigend, met hier en daar een plotselinge versnelling die de rituele rust doorbreekt met bruut geweld.
De zang is diep en grommend, een stem die eerder uit de aarde lijkt te komen dan uit een keel. Gecombineerd met de doomy ondertoon van de composities ontstaat een gevoel van onafwendbaarheid, alsof elk nummer een stap dichter brengt bij een altaar waarop het volgende offer reeds ligt te wachten. De productie is bewust rauw gehouden, maar nooit ten koste van de herkenbaarheid van de riffs of de dreiging in de atmosfeer.
Wat deze demo zo geslaagd maakt, is de balans tussen eenvoud en atmosfeer. De composities blijven sober van opzet, terwijl wat ze oproepen alle hoeken van de crypte vult. Unholy Black Pentagram bewijst dat er door de Spaanse ondergrond nog altijd oud bloed stroomt en dat nieuwe allianties oude rituelen opnieuw kunnen bezielen. Telkens wanneer uit deze hoek een nieuwe naam opduikt, ontwaakt een dorst die zich niet laat lessen, een honger die enkel groeit met elk vers offer. Vijftig exemplaren slechts. Voor wie te laat bij het altaar verschijnt, rest alleen de geur van het offer.

Badalona lies not far from the sea, but what Unholy Black Pentagram conjures has nothing of salt air or sunlight about it. This is a place where blood dries upon stone and incantations are whispered in tongues no one wishes to understand anymore. Active since 2024, this Catalan formation presents its first demo through WolfKult Religion, Desecrating the Altars of Purity: Unholy Rituals of the Goatlord, and it is immediately clear that these are no novices at work.
The names behind the instruments reveal a network running deep through the Spanish underground, while the titles they bear already form a litany of their own. On bass stands the Heretic Servant of the Black Goat and Worshipper of Eternal Fire. Behind the drums dwells the Invoker of the Black Arts and Bells of Darkness, while the Bestial Infamator of the Great Firetrident wields the guitar. Together with the Crucifier of the Seven Infernal Seals of Baphomet, commanding both voice and keyboards, bloodlines converge here that run through the likes of Nigromancer, Under the Moon, Messe de Minuit and Nagyszeben. Each title is an incantation in itself; together they form apparitions risen from the crypt to complete this rite. What is a debut on paper sounds like the work of seasoned conjurers who know exactly which spirits they are summoning.
Musically, the band reaches back to the end of the eighties and the beginning of the nineties, a period when occult black metal developed beyond Scandinavia into a darker dialect of its own. The influence of early Mystifier can be felt in the way primitive aggression and ceremonial weight alternate, while the rougher eruptions occasionally evoke the barbarity of Archgoat. Keyboard passages weave through the riffs like incense through a crypt, never intrusive, always shaping the atmosphere. The pace remains largely restrained and threatening, with sudden accelerations here and there shattering the ritual calm with brute violence.
The vocals are deep and growling, a voice that seems to rise from the earth rather than from a throat. Combined with the compositions’ doomy undertow, this creates a sense of inevitability, as though each track brings you one step closer to an altar upon which the next sacrifice already lies waiting. The production is deliberately raw, yet never at the expense of the riffs’ definition or the menace of the atmosphere.
What makes this demo so successful is the balance between simplicity and atmosphere. The compositions remain austere in construction, while what they evoke fills every corner of the crypt. Unholy Black Pentagram proves that old blood still flows through the Spanish underground and that new alliances remain capable of breathing life into ancient rituals. Whenever a new name emerges from this corner, a thirst awakens that cannot be quenched, a hunger that only grows with each fresh sacrifice. Fifty copies only. For those who arrive too late at the altar, nothing remains but the scent of the offering.
