Anyone who still has Sacrosanct Demonopathy fresh in mind will hear a different balance between the familiar ingredients on Deófol-Cræft. On this new EP for Werewolf Records, the imperial synths that carried the previous album are largely pushed into the background. Lord Vrăjitor lets his guitars do the talking, and they effortlessly fill the space left behind.
A short, sinister synth intro opens Oratio ad draconem rubrum, until a riff and driving drums set the EP in motion. The pace immediately picks up, tremolos cut through the sound and Vrăjitor’s raw shrieks hang above it all. The tremolo riffs carry so much melody by themselves that the keyboards are barely missed. Fast eruptions regularly alternate with slower, more menacing passages, giving these five tracks plenty of movement despite their rawer approach.
Revenant Strigoi drives the music forward whenever the tempo rises, relentless and without looking back. Mortification and Mastery displays that aggression in particularly raw fashion, with forceful guitar work and harsh vocals over raging drums. Here too, those melodic tremolos keep resurfacing. It remains unmistakably Finnish: even when Warmoon Lord bares its teeth, that melancholy continues to run through the riffs.
The synths have by no means disappeared. They now sit largely behind the guitars, carefully measured. On Deófles they are more clearly present, adding extra depth to the melodic passages without becoming prominent. This track in particular shows that Warmoon Lord has not abandoned its familiar character: the same melodic and atmospheric core remains, only now it is built much more emphatically around the guitars themselves. Bloodsword takes a blunter route, barely two and a half minutes long, without synths, just riffs and Strigoi relentlessly pushing things forward. Closing track Night of Silver Fire likewise puts the guitars first, with the keyboards once again in the background, until a short, sinister synth outro closes the circle.
Deófol-Cræft sounds rawer and more direct than its predecessor, yet never loses what makes Warmoon Lord recognisable. The scaled-back keyboards are no loss; instead, they reveal just how much darkness and melody already reside within the guitar work itself. Warmoon Lord retains its own identity: icy, melodic and deeply rooted in the Finnish black metal tradition.
