Zmora – W cieniu martwych drzew (MCD 2026) Review

(English version below)

English version

In Polish folklore, a zmora is a nightmare spirit that descends upon the chest of a sleeping person in the darkness, squeezing the breath from their lungs. The name suits this duo from Poznań, Greater Poland, who have been digging into the night since their 2011 demo. Diabolizer handles drums and vocals, while Bloodwhip takes care of guitars, bass and synthesizers. Wolfspell Records releases W cieniu martwych drzew: three tracks, over twenty-six minutes of raw, unpolished and deeply melancholic black metal.

Cmentarny wiatr (Cemetery Wind) stretches across twelve minutes. A brief acoustic introduction gives way to a desperate, hypnotic riff and relentlessly pounding drums, while subtle synthesizers creep underneath. The sound is harsh and lo-fi, freezing cold from the very first note. Diabolizer’s voice is raw and hoarse, his vocal cords pushed to their limits in a tormented scream. Halfway through, the pace drops for some guitar picking and a solo before the machinery of sorrow roars back to life. The lyrics follow a man who has died to the world and is summoned to the cemetery each night by whispering spirits, wrapped in a burial shroud. His longing for the grave and an eternity beneath the snow resonates through every riff.

W cieniu martwych drzew retains the same mournful riffs, compressing them into just over five minutes. The drums keep raging and the vocals remain just as torn, raw and cold. Amid mist, ravens and torn-open graves, a ritual of blood, a chalice and a knife unfolds, driven by the desire to uncover the secrets of the dead. The narrator invokes the night to fill the loneliness within his dead heart. An incantation steeped in mourning.

Then the voice falls silent. Echo zapomnienia (Echo of Oblivion) unfolds over nine instrumental minutes: ambient, synthesizers and acoustic passages, accompanied by the endless howling of the wind. What the first two tracks lamented and summoned lingers like forgotten voices carried on the wind, barren and ice-cold.

Both musicians also play in Ohyda, a band Zwarte Kunst previously covered and which proved to be a major discovery for us. Zmora sounds colder and more sombre: raw black metal with an atmosphere from which the wind never ceases to blow.
