Wanneer twee entiteiten uit de Finse underground de krachten bundelen op het gerenommeerde Signal Rex, weet je dat je geen gepolijste commerciële metal hoeft te verwachten. Deze split-EP tussen Kerzenlicht en Kirous is een gitzwarte bloemlezing van wat de hedendaagse Finse scene zo vitaal houdt: een balans tussen ijzige traditie en onverwachte nuances.
Kerzenlicht, het project van Haarniska (Kratti) en Dark Divinator van Mystic Blood, Remains of Ash en Dark Divination, trapt af met vier nummers die aanvoelen als een gure winterstorm. Waar hun eerste demo nog experimenteerde met Franse invloeden, horen we hier een band die de “Finse leest” volledig heeft omarmd. Openers As the Snow Falls… en Key to the Dark Fortress zijn doordrenkt van giftigheid en venijn. De riffs zijn krasserig en pieperig op de best mogelijke manier; ze ademen een sfeer van ongemak en oprechte boosheid uit. Hoogtepunt is het Finstalige Kahlittu Ikuisuuteen (“Geketend aan de Eeuwigheid”), waarin de melodische tremolo’s samensmelten met een rauwe agressie die doet denken aan de hoogtijdagen van Horna.
Waar Kerzenlicht de luisteraar murw slaat met sfeer, kiest Kirous voor een andere tactiek. Bekend om hun korte, explosieve demo’s, verrast het project hier met het instrumentale Suomailta. Hoewel de kern van Kirous hondsbrutaal en robuust blijft, denk aan de minimalistische razernij van Ildjarn, is de productie hier opvallend helder. Het meest verrassende element zijn de akoestische gitaarpassages die als een warm, maar mystiek deken over de composities vallen. Het afsluitende Kansa laat bovendien horen dat groezelig baswerk nog steeds een hoeksteen is van hun geluid.
Deze split kent geen winnaar, enkel een gedeelde visie op duisternis. Kerzenlicht legt de stoffige, roestige fundamenten bloot, terwijl Kirous het geheel verder de diepte in trekt met akoestische schaduwen en primitieve kracht. Het is een ongure maar heerlijke release die bewijst dat de Finse underground nog steeds een bodemloze put van inspiratie is.

This split EP between Kerzenlicht and Kirous stands as a pitch black anthology of what keeps the contemporary Finnish scene so vital: a balance between icy tradition and unexpected nuance.
Kerzenlicht, the project of Haarniska (Kratti) and Dark Divinator of Mystic Blood, Remains of Ash and Dark Divination, opens the split with four tracks that feel like a merciless winter storm. Where their first demo still experimented with French influences, this recording reveals a band that has fully embraced the distinctly Finnish path. Openers As the Snow Falls… and Key to the Dark Fortress are drenched in venom and hostility. The riffs are scratchy and shrill in the best possible sense; they radiate discomfort and genuine fury. The absolute highlight is the Finnish sung Kahlittu Ikuisuuteen (“Chained to Eternity”), where melodic tremolo lines merge with a savage aggression reminiscent of the glory days of Horna.
Where Kerzenlicht overwhelms the listener through atmosphere, Kirous chooses a different approach. Known for their short and explosive demos, the project surprises here with the instrumental Suomailta. Although the core of Kirous remains feral and rugged, recalling the minimalist frenzy of Ildjarn, the production is remarkably clear. The most unexpected element comes through the acoustic guitar passages that drape the compositions in a warm yet mystical veil. Closing track Kansa further proves that grimy bass work still forms a cornerstone of their sound.
This split has no winner, only a shared vision of darkness. Kerzenlicht lays down the dusty and rust covered foundations while Kirous drags the material even deeper through acoustic shadows and primitive force. A sinister yet deeply rewarding release that proves the Finnish underground remains a bottomless pit of inspiration.
