Wie Lunar Chalice al volgde via het orthodoxe pelgrimsspoor van “Transcendentia: The Shadow Pilgrimage” weet dat dit Duitse gezelschap zijn rituelen nooit haastig voltrekt. Met “Antiquum” ontsluit de band een oud, stoffig manuscript uit de eigen crypte: vier van de zes stukken bleken reeds in 2020 opgenomen, jaren voordat ze via deze EP het daglicht zouden zien. Een archiefvondst dus, ouder dan het jaartal op de hoes doet vermoeden, en precies daardoor een bevestiging van wat deze band al sinds haar ontstaan drijft: orthodoxe black metal in de striktste, meest ritualistische zin van het woord.
De plaat opent met een intro dat de rite voorzichtig inzet: akoestische snaren tegen een deken van onheilspellende synths, een drempel waarachter iets sluimert zonder zich al te tonen. Wanneer “Angel of Pestilence” vervolgens losbarst, valt meteen de vertrouwde formule op: kille tremolo’s, een messcherpe productie en de heldere, bijna liturgische stem van bassist E.I.-M., die net als op de full-length de rol van ceremoniemeester opeist. “Fear the Hanged Man” bouwt daarop verder met eenzelfde bezwerende drive, waarbij spookachtige synths het geheel naar een hoger niveau tillen zonder het orthodoxe fundament aan te tasten.
De vierde track, “Storm of Heresy”, draait de kelk om: opnieuw akoestische gitaren, opnieuw dezelfde sluimerende synths als in de opener, tot er na verloop van tijd een gitaarriff doorbreekt. Het stuk biedt een moment van stilstand, een graftombe waarin de storm allang is gaan liggen. De titel functioneert er hooguit als een ironische echo van wat ooit had kunnen woeden.
De twee overgebleven stukken, “Night Eternal” en “Walpurgis Dance”, stammen uit de gelijknamige demo waarmee de band ooit haar eerste voetsporen trok. Ze klinken ruwer, minder gepolijst dan het nieuwere materiaal, maar verraden nu al de dramatische bouw en de gevoeligheid voor spanningsopbouw die op “Transcendentia” tot volle wasdom zou komen.
Dat Lunar Chalice geen geïsoleerd fenomeen is, wordt duidelijk zodra men bedenkt hoe diep de wortels van deze cel reiken in de orthodoxe onderstroom: gitaristen M. en Noxathra delen hun bloed met Malefica, terwijl Noxathra en drummer Odium Aeterum elkaar bovendien terugvinden binnen het heerlijke Spectral Whisper. Een netwerk van monniken die telkens onder andere namen hetzelfde altaar blijven bedienen, en Schattenkult Produktionen bewijst met deze release opnieuw oog te hebben voor precies dat weefsel van de Duitse ondergrond. “Antiquum” is vooral een archiefstuk dat de continuïteit van deze orthodoxe cel bevestigt: kort, gedisciplineerd en zonder overbodige franjes, een EP die haar herkomst uit 2020 draagt als een oud litteken, nog steeds vers genoeg om te bloeden.

Those who already followed Lunar Chalice along the orthodox pilgrimage trail of “Transcendentia: The Shadow Pilgrimage” will know that this German entity never conducts its rituals in haste. With “Antiquum”, the band unseals an old, dust-covered manuscript from its own crypt: four of the six pieces were already recorded in 2020, years before they would finally see the light of day through this EP. An archival discovery, then, older than the date on the cover would suggest, and precisely because of that a confirmation of what has driven this band since its inception: orthodox black metal in the strictest, most ritualistic sense of the term.
The record opens with an intro that cautiously sets the rite in motion: acoustic strings against a blanket of ominous synths, a threshold beyond which something lies dormant without yet revealing itself. When “Angel of Pestilence” subsequently erupts, the familiar formula immediately becomes apparent: icy tremolos, a razor-sharp production and the clear, almost liturgical voice of bassist E.I.-M., who, as on the full-length, assumes the role of master of ceremonies. “Fear the Hanged Man” builds upon this with the same incantatory drive, while ghostly synths elevate the whole without disturbing its orthodox foundation.
The fourth track, “Storm of Heresy”, turns the chalice upside down: acoustic guitars once more, the same brooding synths from the opener once more, until eventually a guitar riff breaks through. The piece offers a moment of stillness, a tomb in which the storm has long since subsided. Its title functions at most as an ironic echo of what might once have raged.
The two remaining pieces, “Night Eternal” and “Walpurgis Dance”, originate from the eponymous demo with which the band first left its footprints behind. They sound rawer, less polished than the newer material, yet already reveal the dramatic construction and sensitivity to building tension that would come to full fruition on “Transcendentia”.
That Lunar Chalice is no isolated phenomenon becomes clear when one considers how deeply the roots of this cell reach into the orthodox undercurrent: guitarists M. and Noxathra share their blood with Malefica, while Noxathra and drummer Odium Aeterum also find themselves reunited within the excellent Spectral Whisper. A network of monks who, under ever-changing names, continue to serve the same altar, and with this release Schattenkult Produktionen once again demonstrates an eye for precisely this fabric of the German underground. “Antiquum” is above all an archival piece confirming the continuity of this orthodox cell: brief, disciplined and stripped of unnecessary embellishment, an EP that bears its origins in 2020 like an old scar, still fresh enough to bleed.
